CON PAN

Café con pan—a pause in time. This take on the bistro chair evokes inviting, pebble-like contours and merges the geometric with the organic. Much like the tradition of café con pan, this collection aims to play in the space between structure and irregularity.

PROJECT DETAILS

The brief for this project was to reimagine and design a bistro chair and table, then build the chair. This chair was designed, tested, and constructed over ten weeks. My goal was to create a bistro set that would fit into the courtyards of Hermosillo, Sonora.

Typically, a bistro set is light and portable, but for this design, I wanted to create something with heft and presence, conveying the weight of the café con pan ritual—to create a seat that invites long, drawn-out conversations with loved ones.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS

The design was executed in cherry wood for its warm tone, which complements the concrete walls and desert geography of the intended location. The seat was carved using CNC technology, while the rest was constructed with standard shop tools then refined by hand using an angle grinder and a variety of files.

Hand shaping allows for the exploration of edge conditions that influences the sensation of soft, pebble-like contours while maintaining structure and intention.
